Guest Speaker David Mckie: Media and The Law
David joined the firm of Levy McRae in 1996 as a trainee before becoming a partner in 2003.
He is part of the litigation team and has extensive court experience in both criminal and civil practice, fatal accident inquiries, employment tribunals and courts-martial. He has a particular interest in continuing professional development and training for his professional clients, running regular seminars and workshops.
In addition to a large personal injury, commercial litigation and road traffic practice, his additional areas of specialisation include media law, wildlife and countryside law and care sector law.
His media law work includes defamation and contempt of court cases and he has been central to the recent changes in contempt of court, both in the most liberal approach now adopted by the courts and in challenges to restricted reporting orders in courts and tribunals. He advises many of the leading media organisations in Scotland and he heads up the media law unit at the University of Glasgow. He has written several articles in newspapers, magazines and academic journals and regularly lectures both in academic and professional contexts on the subject.
He is solicitor to the Scottish Gamekeepers’ Association, Scottish Association for country Sports, the Scottish Clay target Association and acts for many of sporting estates in Scotland. He is an adviser to Scottish Land and Estates as well as several individual landowners and land agents on many aspects of land management, with a particular focus on wildlife crime, vicarious liability and on firearms regulation.
David also acts for a number of care sector organisations (including the largest in the UK) advising them on all ranges of litigation advice, including sudden deaths, regulatory affairs and health and safety, as well as representing them in prosecutions, FAIs or civil actions.
David is married with three sons and a daughter.
