May Lunch: Andrew Malcolm—
CEO The Malcolm Group

Number 7 Restaurant, Celtic Park

Tuesday 20th May 2014

82 members and guests attended our May business club lunch, on what was our first visit to Celtic Park Football Stadium.

Our Special guest speaker Andrew Malcolm talked about the history of the company, their plans for the future and their recipe for success.

Donald Malcolm was just 14 when he inherited the family business in the 1940s. Its assets were a single truck and a horse and cart. By 1960, when the firm was acquired by Grampian Holdings, Donald had built it up to a fleet of 37 vehicles – plus seven items of plant. Consistent investment in our business, often ahead of market trends lifted the company to its current status as a respected player in the logistics and construction markets. On 18th January 2002, Grampian Holdings plc was renamed The Malcolm Group plc and was fully listed on the UK Stock Exchange. In May 2005, after 45 successful years in the ‘public’ domain, the Group was once again taken into private ownership by the Malcolm family.

Age 52, Andrew’s experience has covered every practical and managerial aspect of the Company. He started from school in the repair workshops and progressed to driving general haulage vehicles; he became Road Foreman and then Depot Manager. In 1989 he took over the running of the Logistics Services Division and was the driving force behind its transformation into a major, countrywide player in the logistics sector. In 1994 he became Chief Executive of both divisions and joined the Grampian Holdings plc Board in 1997. In 2005, he successfully led the deal to take the plc company back into private family ownership. His vast and detailed knowledge of his industry, customers and employees, has been built up over his thirty six years with the Company.
