Burns Lunch 2016:
Willie Fleming

Pollokshields Burgh Hall,
Glasgow

Tuesday 26th January 2016

Willie is a retired Biomedical Scientist after having worked for the Heath Service for nearly 43 years in the Haematology/Blood Transfusion department at the R.A.I. then the R.A.H. in Paisley.

He attended Camphill High School in Paisley where mostly English Literature that taught. Robert Burns or any other Scottish poet for that matter, were not mentioned. Like most Scottish homes there was a Burns book in the book case but it was not until he joined Freemasonry in 1975 that he developed his interested in the life and works of Robert Burns. He is still an active member and enjoys the fellowship there. Willie was recently invited to join the Paisley Burns Club, arguably the oldest Burns Club in the world and recently presented his first paper there.

He is also a member of Charleston Bowling Club in Paisley where he helps with the organisation of their Annual Burns Supper. Robert Burns was a complex character and attending Burns Suppers and listening to other speakers’ opinions helped Willie build a picture of what our National Bard was like.

He is married to Susan and has 2 daughters Heather and Catrina, who was recently married to Cameron. Since retiring Willie have taken up hill walking and along with his friend Andy, walked the West Highland Way earlier this year.
