Gordon Matheson is a member of the Labour Party and was elected Leader of Glasgow Council on 10 May 2010.

In the May 2012 local government elections he led the Scottish Labour Party to victory, securing an overall majority in Glasgow. He was named Local Politician of the Year in the 2012 Herald Awards, and again in 2014.

He led the city during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, regarded as the best ever, and successfully negotiated with government the largest City Deal in the UK and the first outside England, and secured Glasgow’s membership of the UK Core Cities Group.

Gordon Matheson was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) In The Queen’s 2015 New Year Honours List.

As Leader, Gordon Matheson has established the Commonwealth Jobs and Graduate Funds, approved a scheme to reduce Glasgow’s landfill by 90%, introduced winter fuel payments for Glasgow pensioners, embarked on the £250 million refurbishment or rebuild of every primary and ASL school in the city, and launched the award-winning People Make Glasgow city brand.

He was first elected to Glasgow City Council in May 1999. Prior to being elected Leader he served in a variety of capacities including Bailie of the City, Justice of the Peace, Executive Member for Education and City Treasurer.

Councillor Matheson is a graduate of both Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities, is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

He has successfully completed both the Great Scottish Run and the New York Marathon.
