Tuesday 24th April 2018 | 12pm–2pm

Keeping information safe from hacking, password attacks and other forms of malware is an important business concern. So what should small and medium-sized businesses be doing about cybersecurity?

Dr Karen Renaud is currently Professor of Cyber Security at Abertay University, Dundee. She was educated at the University of Pretoria, South Africa and the University of Glasgow.  She has been a Visiting Lecturer at Darmstadt and at the University of the Western Cape. She was on a secondment to the Scottish Business Resilience Centre working with SMEs to improve resilience to cyber attack. This was funded by the Royal Academy of Engineers.

In 2016/17 she was a Fullbright Cyber Security Scholar at Mississippi State University.

Dr Renaud has made contributions in the field of usable security, technology adoption, email usage, electronic voting and design patterns. By meeting and speaking with business owners and industry specialists across Scotland, Karen was able to directly share research outputs on ‘human-centred security’. This involved publishing a website to highlight simple and usable security practices. The insights gained from this exercise have informed her teaching by providing a realistic view of industry needs relating to cybersecurity.
