With Guest Speaker Len Murray
Club President John Stevenson extended warm welcome to all club members and guests to
our 29th Annual General Meeting.
We then lifted the mood with some light-hearted stories from Len Murray.
Len Murray was born in Glasgow a long time ago, he says, certainly long before Traffic Wardens were ever invented. After studying modern languages, history and law at Glasgow University he qualified as a solicitor.
He practised as a solicitor (Justice of the Peace and Solicitor to the Supreme Courts of Scotland) in Glasgow for over forty years until 2003 when he retired. He says that he wishes he’d done so years ago; so do many of his former clients.
Len practised in the Scottish Courts throughout his professional life and he built up one of the most respected law practices in the country. He was once described by a High Court judge as “the most respected pleader of his generation” and in the media as “one of the most acclaimed Scottish lawyers”. His colleagues nicknamed him ‘The Silver Fox’ though they could never be persuaded to say why.
Len Murray is now equally known as one of the country’s top after-dinner speakers and was Scottish Wit of the Year 2012. He is also a former winner of the prestigious Wag of the Year award.
His autobiography, called The Pleader, was published by Mainstream a few years ago to very good reviews, most of which, some suspect, he wrote himself. In sporting matters, he played football at Glasgow University and as a schoolboy once represented Scotland at tennis though he was never asked back! He confines himself now to the golf course and the bowling rinks where he has been outstandingly unsuccessful.
