Born in Pollok on the south side of Glasgow where he attended Crookston Castle Secondary.
Started off a career as a Civil Engineer then decided it wasn’t for him and joined Strathclyde Police in 1979. Posted to Govan working in uniform and plainclothes; promoted to Sergeant at Greenock in 1987
Promoted Inspector at Saltcoats then three years later moved back to Headquarters in Glasgow.
Promoted Chief Inspector working in Johnstone and then Superintendent and Head of the Media Office. No, it wasn’t interference on the television it was actually him!
After almost 5 years returned to Greenock in late 2000 as Superintendent in Charge of Inverclyde Sub-Division.
Appointed Deputy Divisional Commander at ‘K’ Division, Paisley, before moving to Headquarters as Chief Superintendent in Charge of Specialist Operations at Police Headquarters, Glasgow. This involved responsibility for the Support Unit, Firearms Unit, Road Policing, Marine Policing, Air Support (Force Helicopter), Mounted Branch, Dog Branch, VIP Protection, Emergencies Planning and Major Event Planning – in other words all the toys!
Working at Divisional HQ at Govan, he was regularly Ground Commander at Ibrox Stadium home of the famous Glasgow Rangers. Retired from Strathclyde Police in 2010 after 31 years.
Lives in the Southside of Glasgow, has two grown–up children, Graeme (29) and Lynsey (27). Hobbies – Past Captain of Ralston Golf Club, handicap of 12 and getting higher, keeping fit, listening to music, visiting good restaurants, travelling and reading.
In demand on the After-Dinner Circuit for many years, including Burns Suppers, (had 25 in 2016 and so far, 24 in 2017) – he was in Nova Scotia two years ago for a Burns Supper.
Has spoken at numerous Golf Clubs, Rugby Clubs, Sportsman’s Dinners & Corporate Events.
